This is the list I used for a 5D4N camping trip to the Australian outback. Bear in mind that I went in early September so it was rather warm during the day and cold at night.
Clothing
- Comfortable hiking outfits
- Shorts during the day
- Track pants for the night and to sleep in
- Long sleeve thermal for the night
- Beanie
- Socks (for hiking & sleeping)
- Hiking/walking shoes
- Thongs/flip flops
- Underwear
- Swimmers during summer
- Bra/sports bra (I find them more comfortable for long hikes)
Toiletries
- Towel (get yourself a traveller’s towel- they save heaps of space and are super absorbent)
- Shampoo/conditioner/body soap/facial wash
- Hand sanitiser (you will get your hands dirty often and this comes in handy as there will be limited supply of water to wash your hands before eating)
- Wet wipes (great for freshening up)
- Sunblock
- Moisturiser & lip balm (especially during winter, you can’t imagine how dry your skin gets)
- Panty liners for girls
For survival
- Sleeping bag/swag/tent
- Torch (most camp sites will be really dark or pitch black after the sun goes down, so a torch is essential, just a small one will do. I got mine from Daiso for $2)
- Water bottle (at least 1.5 litres, refill whenever you can)
- Panadol and antihistamines
- Chargers or spare batteries for phones and cameras (not all campsites have electricity)
- Inflatable pillow (if you sleep way better with your head elevated like me, an inflatable pillow will do a huge difference and folds down as thin as a piece of paper. Again, available for $2 from Daiso)
- Snacks (bring them on your hikes and enjoy them at a good spot)
- Fly net during summer (there are many, many flies when it’s warm and if you are one that gets easily annoyed, bring a fly net)
